What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus is  a mosquito-borne disease (arbovirus) that was originally found in Africa.  In 1999, it was detected in New York when several birds in the Bronx Zoo mysteriously died.  WNV has now spread across the country and has become endemic in United States.

West Nile Virus belongs to a larger group of viruses that includes DengueJapanese EncephalitisSt. Louis Encephalitis, and Yellow Fever.
